With the announcement of the Pulitzer recipients not far away (April 14th)-it occurred to me that when the winners and finalists are announced-a great many readers might not have been aware, let alone have read, many of these prize-winning works of journalism.
So, as a run-up to the official announcement, DailyNewsGems.com, will be highlighting some outstanding works of journalism, worthy of Pulitzer consideration.

The San Antonio Express-News published in May, 2013, a Special Report: “Twice Betrayed'', a seven-month investigation, which took a hard look at the insidious and long-standing problem of sex assaults in the military as it documented, in chilling detail, how victims who report the incidents were often subjected to retaliation and discharged on false charges, including the most disturbing of all, mental disorder. The Express-News, in a scrupulous examination through dozens of interviews with experts and victims, including reviewing thousands of pages of military and medical documents, found practically no psychological evaluation being conducted, while many discharges were strongly disputed by doctors outside the military.
The investigation was initially set in motion in 2012, when I-team member Karisa King and military reporter Sig Christenson covered an appalling sex scandal involving a basic training instructor who had serially raped female recruits at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. http://goo.gl/2I0J4k
The San Antonio Express News reported on another major national scandal in 2013, which centered on the freedom of Anna Vasquez, Elizabeth Ramirez, Kristie Mayhugh and Cassandra Rivera.
After spending more than a decade in prison for a crime they say never happened, the women, known nationwide as the “San Antonio Four,” were released from prison in November, 2013. The accused continued to profess their innocence ever since being blamed for assaulting two young women nearly 20 years ago.
Express-News Staff Writer Michelle Mondo had been investigating the cases of the four accused women since 2010. http://goo.gl/5inJ85
