On Thursday, the NFL kicks off its regular season when the Super Bowl (XLIII) champion Pittsburgh Steelers lock horns with the Tennessee Titans in a nationally broadcast game on NBC at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh
Remember, this was supposed to be last year’s epic showdown to decide who was going to the Super Bowl; only that the no 1 seed Titans, who entered the playoffs with an imposing 13-3 record, botched things badly on the road to Tampa Fla, losing to the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Divisional playoff game in Nashville, when Matt Stover floated a 43-yard field goal through the uprights with less than a minute remaining, to give the Ravens a stunning 13-10 win over their hated conference rivals.
So the slug-fest everyone anticipated is finally here; it only took a few more months than expected.
As we prepare for the curtain-raiser at 8: 30 p.m (ET) in a stadium that will undoubtedly be spilling over with “Terrible Towel’’ waving fans, here are some historic NFL facts and records to whet your appetite.
